It’s been a busy year for the cycle BOOM team. In 2015, we completed almost all of our fieldwork with just a few remaining participants to recruit for our cycling and wellbeing trials. In the early part of 2016, we will focus on making sense of the information and data that has been accumulated over the past two years.
This is a huge challenge on what is a complex set of multiple forms of data. For example, for Oxford and Bristol alone we have some 100 hours of audio recordings from our biographical interviews; 25 hours of video of mobile rides captured while ‘shadowing’ participants; and, 40 hours of post-ride video elicitation interviews with our ride participants! That is not to mention the other array of data and information we have accumulated including photos of bikes and equipment; STRAVA traces of rides; participants’ diaries used in our cycling and wellbeing trial; and data from sensors used to measure physiological response of participants when riding in the built environment!
In our August 2015 blog entry, we wrote about how we are addressing the challenge of organising and making sense of all of this data. You can read more about this, together with a review of our other activities in 2015, in our end of year newsletter. As we enter the final year of cycle BOOM, we are looking forward to revealing the findings of our study and to start to engage with the public and decision makers on ways that cycling for an ageing population can be supported and developed.
We leave you with some images of the types of bicycles used by our cycle BOOM participants.
Season’s Greetings and all the very best for 2016 from the cycle BOOM team!
